Queen Letizia style: the best looks from Spain’s answer to Kate Middleton

Queen Letizia has often been called Spain’s answer to Kate Middleton. And like the Duchess of Cambridge, she is well practised in mixing affordable high street pieces with designer buys, and a firm supporter of her country’s designers.

The European royal, who came from a middle-class family and worked as a news anchor for companies including CNN+ and Televisión Española before marrying Felipe, then Prince of Asturias, in 2004, is known for her chic but relatable style. After Felipe’s father’s 2014 abdication, the pair became Spain’s monarchs, and her look only improved.

Letizia proved as much yesterday, as she attended a Commemorative Event for The World Day Of The Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Valencia.

For the occasion, she brought her typically sunny Spanish style, turning heads in a fuchsia pink, cut-out dress by Spanish brand Cayro Woman, costing at a very reasonable $61 (£52). She chose to polish it off with a matching bag and pair of pop pink stilettos, both by Carolina Herrera.

The Queen of Spain is no stranger to opting for standout, monochrome colours with matching extras, though.

Attending the Armed Forces day in Madrid, in May 2021, she wore a candy pink dress coat with coordinating shoes and clutch. For 2020’s New Year’s Military Parade, it was her all navy blue gown with lapels, and blue heels that stole the show. And for Prince Philip’s memorial service, at Westminster Abbey in March this year, the royal wore a forest green overcoat with matching hat, Hugo Boss bag and snakeskin effect Manalo Blahnik stilettos.

But perhaps the most memorable moment, when it comes to Letizia’s coordinating, came earlier this May. She wore the same black and white Mango dress as Inmaculada Vivas Teson, the recipient of the Reina Letizia award she was presenting. They laughed it off – as you must, in clothing catastrophes – in their mutal love of a good deal. It cost only £59.99.

Another snap moment came with the Duchess of Cambridge herself, as the pair rode by carriage to 2019’s Order of the Garter service in Windsor, England.

Both wore similar black and white frocks, black headdresses, clutches and shoes. Great minds! Middleton’s Peter Pan collar style was by Catherine Walker, while Letizia supported her country’s fashion industry in a spotted dress by Spanish brand Cherubina.

As with Middleton and Markle, there are fan accounts devoted to crediting what Letizia wears. Queen Letizia Style documents her ensembles while on Royal tours and offers breakdowns of each outfit, from custom Carolina Herrera to Bottega Veneta frocks, a starry Nina Ricci number she’s re-worn and her leather dresses from & Other Stories. She is also known to wear Felipe Varela, Imiloa and Cortana at formal events.

Naturally, Letizia’s wedding dress was one of her most defining looks – and a far, far cry from any high street steals she has worn since, coming with a jaw-dropping £6 million price tag. Designed by royal couturier Manuel Pertegaz, it had a classic huge train, striking standing collar and gilded gold embroidery.

And in comparison to Meghan Markle’s Wedding dress, which cost an estimated £110,000, and Middleton’s which was £250,000, Letizia really did steal the crown.
